ミュージックサイレンとは

Every day in Oita, music is heard from the roof of the TOKIWA main store. Did you know that the music is made by a real instrument? The details of this instrument are very interesting. The machine which makes the music is called a “music siren”.

ミュージックサイレンの現状と「最後」の理由

In 2024, there were just three sirens which chimed daily in Japan. They were in Iga City in Mie Prefecture, Yawatahama City in Ehime Prefecture, and in Oita City. However, in 2025 the music sirens that are in Yawatahama and Iga City stopped working!  In Yawatahama, the city ordered new parts and repaired the siren. It worked for a few months, but then it broke again. Now, the city is broadcasting recordings of the chimes on speakers, but it is not the same experience. So, Oita City’s music siren has become the last of the music sirens.

    The instrument is really quite interesting. It might be very different from your imagination. It is a large group of discs that spin on a metal cylinder. In Oita City, when it’s 10:00am, noon and 7:00pm, the cylinder begins to spin. That’s why you hear the pitch rise slowly at the beginning of the chime. Once the machine is spinning at full speed, special outside covers turn. These outside covers have big holes. Air blows through these holes and makes sound, sort of like a flute. The position of the holes changes the pitch.

日本のミュージックサイレンの歴史

    There used to be around 200 music sirens in Japan. During the Pacific War, Hamamatsu City was bombed many times, and Nippon Gakki, (the company which became YAMAHA), stopped making musical instruments. After the war, YAMAHA rebuilt the factory, and invented musical sirens that played notes for peaceful daily time signals that didn’t sound like war sirens.

   People in the 1950’s probably appreciated these peaceful sounds, especially because they had experienced the war. But now that the Pacific War happened more than 80 years ago, what does this music siren make you feel when you hear it? I asked one Oita citizen and he said, “Whenever I hear the siren, it makes me happy. I think of everyone else in Oita who is also hearing it at the same time. It makes me feel connected to people around me.”

    Since two of the last three sirens broke last year, it’s possible that Oita’s music siren may also break soon. If you like the sound of the siren, then please be sure to enjoy it while you can.

大分では毎日、大分のトキハ本店の屋上から音楽が聞こえます。その音楽は本物の楽器(instrument)によって作られていることを知っていましたか。楽器のしくみ(details)はとても興味深い(interesting)ものです。

その音を作る機械(machine)はミュージックサイレンと呼ばれています。2024年には、毎日鳴る(chime daily)サイレンは日本に3台だけありました。三重県の伊賀市、愛媛県の八幡浜市、そして大分市です。しかし2025年、八幡浜と伊賀のミュージックサイレンは動かなくなりました(stopped working)。

八幡浜市では新しい部品(parts)を注文(order)して修理(repair)しました。数か月間は動きましたが、また壊れてしまいました(broke again)。今、市は録音された(recorded)音をスピーカー(speakers)で流していますが、本物と同じ体験(experience)ではありません。こうして大分市のミュージックサイレンは最後(last)の一台になりました。

この楽器は本当におもしろいです。多くの人が想像(imagination)するものとは大きく違うかもしれません。これは金属の円筒(cylinder: metal tube)のまわりにあるたくさんの円盤(discs)が回転(rotation)するしくみです。大分市では10:00、12:00、19:00になると円筒が回り始めます。そのため、チャイムの最初に音の高さ(pitch)が少しずつ上がって聞こえます。

完全な速度(full speed)で回転すると、外側の特別なカバー(covers)が動きます。このカバーには大きな穴(holes)があります。空気(air)がその穴を通りぬけて音を出します。それはフルート(flute)のように空気で鳴らす仕組みです。穴の位置(position)が変わることで音の高さが変わります。

日本にはかつて約200台(around 200)のミュージックサイレンがありました。太平洋戦争(Pacific War)の間、浜松市は何度も空襲(bombing raids)を受け、日本楽器製造株式会社(後のヤマハ: Yamaha)は楽器の製造を中止(stopped production)しました。戦後、ヤマハは工場(factory)を再建(rebuild)し、戦時中の警報サイレン(war siren)とは違う、平和(peaceful)な毎日の時刻(time signals)を知らせるために音階(notes)を奏でるミュージックサイレンを発明(invented)しました。

1950年代の人々は、この平和な音をありがたく感じたことでしょう。戦争を経験(experience war)していたからです。しかし太平洋戦争から80年以上過ぎた今、このミュージックサイレンを聞くと、あなたはどんな気持ち(feelings)になりますか。
