A Very Unique Vending Machine

On his way home from school, Naoto saw something strange. It was a vending machine stood near the old bookstore which had been closed for many years. But he walked along this street every day. He had never seen it there before.

The machine looked fairly normal. It was white, with flashing lights. But the buttons were not for drinks or snacks. Instead, they said unusual things:

A second chance

200円
 Perfect weather
for one day
250円
 Find a lost item
400円

At first, Naoto figured it was a joke. “It might be someone’s art project”, he thought. But he was curious, and he had 200 yen in his pocket. He looked around. No one else was there. He put 200 yen in the machine and pushed the “second chance” button.

The machine made an unusual soft sound. Then a small piece of old paper came out. It said:

Go back to 7:30 this morning.
You can try again.

Suddenly, the sky changed. He was standing at the front door of his house, with the morning sun in his eyes. He looked at his phone. It was 7:30am! “No way!!”, he said out loud, in disbelief. This morning, he had made a mistake. He shouted at his little sister because he was late. But now, he walked back inside and said, “I’m sorry.” At first, she was surprised by his sudden change of heart. But she softly smiled and forgave him. He was grateful for the second chance to make things right.

That night, he ran to the old bookstore again. But the vending machine was gone. He stood there for a long time, thinking. “Someone might find it tomorrow, in another part of town.” He hoped that the machine would help someone else, if they needed it.
